Jurassic world is becoming real?

Comparing to the past, science has been developed enough to change DNA structures of various organism from the plants to the animals. GM foods are dominating the food industry, and some scientists are even trying their hand at changing human’s DNA structures. Some people voice concern over this issue because it could lead to the disturbance of the eco system and results in a terrifying situation like Jurassic World. In the movie, the scientists modify and combine dinosaurs DNA with other animals for commercial reasons. It is definite that what they have done is unethical. However, what are the standards for ethics? Who decides what is right or wrong?

Depending on places and people, the standard of ethics varies. However, I believe the scientists and engineers are not the only ones who should be responsible for the results, but the people who enjoy the benefits of it should also have a moral obligation to care about possible effects. We should make other scientists as well as companies not fear of disclosing the potential danger because of their social images. In addition, we should make social punishments for those who endanger human lives.

  1. I was fortunate enough to watch Jurassic World this weekend. I thought that the movie didn't live up to its hype, but anyway, still a nice break from all the packing I'm enslaved to for the past week.

  2. I agree with you Gigi! I feel it can lead to disastrous situations the more scientists play around with nature. A more open, honest policy should be implemented when they experiment around with human DNA.

  3. I see where you are coming from. I actually saw Jurassic World today and had some of the same feelings. There is a price to innovation and tampering with the natural world. Progress comes at a cost and degree of the consequences depends on the action. I thought it was also wrong for the scientists to exploit genetic splicing and tampering with evolution, just to try to make more profit and increase commercial success. Like Chris Pratt's character says in the movie, "You went out and made a new dinosaur...probably not a good idea." Also, I agree that there is not one scapegoat to blame, but everyone has to keep each other in check. Thanks for the interesting post.

  4. I have not watched the newest Jurassic World movie. You carry out a very good question and there is never a answer or standard of it, which is about the "ethics". Sometimes, many people use "ethics" as the excuse to reject some certain reason. Like in the movie, scientists modify and combine the dinosaur's DNA for commercial reason. It is absolutely not ethics for commercial reason. But what about for scientific experience? Is that ethical then? Everyone knows the fact that dinosaurs are extinct. No human actually see the real dinosaurs but only the fossil to proof they are exist in long ages ago. If scientists can know more about the dinosaurs and its ages by changing and combining the DNA, is that acceptable?
